Music Video Final Cut

After making some final alterations, this is the final cut of my music video.

Magazine Advert Final Draft

Digipak Final Draft

Evaluation Question 2/3/4

This is a Prezi on Evaluation Question 3

This is a Prezi for evaluation question 4
Digipak and Magazine Advert

I also devised a similar survey to get feedback on my advert and digipak. This also consisted of four questions, that would help me when reassessing my design and making any improvements or changes.

1)what are the good points about my digipak?

2)Do you have any suggestions you could make for improvements?

From these suggestions, I can make some simple alterations to my digipak design in  order to improve it. I intend on making the font of the track listing black, on a white back ground.

3)What do you like about the magazine advert?

4)Do you have any suggestions on how to improve the magazine advert?

From the suggestions, I can make some simple alterations my magazine advert to improve it. I plan on changing the colour of the font, and also making similar changes as I did to the digipak in order to give some continuation.

Audience feedback

As well as carrying out peer feedback amongst my peers in the class, I sought out feedback from my target audience. I did this by creating a survey using the website Survey monkey, and sending it to my friends on Facebook that have an interest in the acoustic music genre, and fit my target audience. I also included participants that are outside of my target audience, as this would give a variety of opinions on what they thought of my music video, digipak and magazine advert.

Music Video

I sent my participants a link to the video and a survey that I politely asked them to fill out, via Facebook messenger. The survey consisted of four simple questions, asking of their honest opinion.

1) What would you say the target audience is for this video?

The general consensus from my audience feedback, is that the video fit my intended target audience very well as most users said they thought it was likely to be aimed at females between the ages of around 12-18 with some users saying it may appeal to people in their 20s. The video may also appeal to both genders.

2) Does this video relate well to the genre

I made this question a simple "yes or no" response, and my feedback was that 100% of the people I asked answered yes.

3)What are the good points of the video?

I had many positive answers to this question, that were very encouraging. I generally found people had appraisal for the chemistry between the actors, and the theme of the video matching well with the genre and target audience.

Many of the responses said they liked the "cute" story line and that it went well with the up beat and happy themes of the music.

4) How do you think the video could be improved?

This question is what I found most helpful from the audience feedback, as it made me aware of any issue that could be addressed to improve the music video.

Unfortunately, I am unable to address the issues with the actors appearing uncomfortable or aware of the camera as they aren't available for more filming. However, this feedback will be very useful when revisiting the editing of my music video. I intend to add in more fades as transitions between shots, so the video runs more smoothly and professional.

Evaluation Question 1

Digipak and Magazine Advert First Draft

As well as producing a music video, I have designed a magazine advert and digipak that would accompany it. I have incorporated similar imagery to what is seen in the music video, and even a shot from the video on the inside of the Digipak. There is also a close relation between the design of the advert and the design of the Digipak, that audiences would recognise. I have used elements that would also appeal to my target audience, as it focuses on the Autumn. This relates to the title of the album "Autumn Love". The imagery and the text work well together.

As this is my first draft, I will get audience feedback and make any changes that I feel appropriate for improvement.

pre production planning documents

As part of my pre pre production planning before shooting my music video, there was some factors I had to consider. I filled out a risk assessment form to take any risks into consideration and how to surpass them, a call sheet for each of the days to plan out a schedule for every day that I was shooting, and a storyboard to plan the shots I would take for my video so I had a rough idea of what filming I needed to do and when I should plan to do it.

Call Sheets

Story Boards

The storyboards allowed me to plan out what shots I would film in order to put together my music video.

Organisation of Actors

Organising actors

In order to arrange filming dates, times and locations with the two actors in my music video, I made use of a Facebook group message. This allowed me to easily contact both actors with the same information, quickly and efficiently

The group chat allowed us to discuss our availability, and settle on days and times that we are all free to film. It also allowed us to inform each other if one of us was late, or unable to attend that day.

I chose Florrie and Scott, as they both have had previous experience of acting and are good friends. I thought this would make their chemistry on camera appear more convincing, and convey a genuine and sincere relationship that I want my video to be about. They appeared to be comfortable in each other's presence,  and acted well as a romantic couple.

pre production planning-

Before I set out to film to footage for my music video, there were some factors I had to make a dicision on:
-The Location
-The Actors
-planning when and where I will meet my actors on the days I want to film, and working around their schedule to ensure they'll also be free.

The main theme of the video is a romantic and upbeat relationship, between two cheerful characters that go along with the upbeat song and the lyrics that tell a story. Therefore, I asked my friend Florrie who is a bubbly girl I thought might fit the role. She is also a friend of Scott, and as they are familiar with each other I asked them as their comfort and happy attitude would come across as genuine on camera.

The main location I used is the Chapelfield park. This is a small park surrounded by trees and benches, that have sweet and romantic connotations. The natural environment is often assosciated with the acoustic genre of music, and the happy and upbeat flow of the song goes well with the area.

This is the location of Chapelfield park on a map of Norwich. It isn't far from where I live, only a short bus ride meaning it was easily accesible. My actors also live in relative proximity to this site, and so posed as an ideal location. Around the park there are many benches and a gazebo in the center, that I used as props in scenes of my music video. The park is open and exposed to bright lighting, that made filming much easier  and it added to the happier feel of the video. It also offered the opportunity for clear shots of the sky, unobstructs by buildings meaning I was able to get striking shots of the early evening sky at sunset which had great romantic connotations.
Here is a photograph of Chapelfield park. When I shot my video it was in the Autumn and Winter season, so the grass was covered with the fallen leaves and the bright orange colours and bright lighting added to the sweet and innocent feel of the video, and goes with the conventions of the acoustic music genre

initial audience feedback from final cut of music video

After editing together my music video, I asked other students in the class to fill in a questionnaire after watching the video in it's current state. This allows me to get the opinion of others, and make any changes that seem appropriate in order to improve the music video. Here are the questions, and the responses that I received.

11)      Favourite images and connotations
I like the way that the couple holding hands and putting their arms around each other showed how much they cared about each other. This really showed the emotion of love and emphasised the loss at the end of the video.
I really liked that we got to see them talk a lot and smile to each other, shows friendships as well as a relationship.
The footage was really sweet, worked well with the song.

22)      What aspects of the video promote the track?
The use of similar locations helps the audience to recognise this in the digipak. The narrative also features a happy couple who smile and enjoy spending time together, which matches the cheery upbeat feel of the song.
The cheery mood of the couple links well with the up beat track.
A lot of the footage was in time with the music.

33)      How does the video use musical genre conventions?
There is some good use of different shots, such as close ups of the characters, helping the audience to identify with the characters. I also really liked how it got darker and became night time towards the end of the video, as the narrative became sad.
The couple are outside and being by themselves which is associated with the indie genre, I agree with what the person above has said about the footage getting darker towards the end of the video, I didn’t notice it happening but now it’s been pointed out, I think it’s a good effect. The change in clothes also represents the amount of time that they were together.
In time with the music.
44)      Creative use of technical skills?
I think there were a good range of shots used throughout the video, and the use of cuts made the whole narrative run smoothly.
I was really impressed with the shot of the girl whilst she was spinning around.
The cuts were good. Variety of shots.

55)      Areas for improvement?
I think there could be quicker editing in some places, as sometimes shots go on for a little too long. You could also perhaps use filters on the sunny shots as this might make the lighting look nicer.
Editing needs to be faster, some of the shots are really long with not much happening, for example the shot we see of the couple spinning around doesn’t need to be as long as it is, neither does the close up of the girl’s eyes –perhaps cut it closer to the blink.
Some of the shots were too long, perhaps fading more between the shots and cutting a few more into the long shots would help create more variety and shorten the long shots.

16)      Favourite images and connotations
It’s a happy and upbeat song and video. I like the different locations; park and city streets.

26)      What aspects of the video promote the track?
The visuals match the music. Some of the target audience might be able to relate to the characters in the video as they are probably around the same age.

37)      How does the video use musical genre conventions?
I’ve seen music videos by bands that sound the same to this one and have the same style of video.

48)      Creative use of technical skills?
The transitions and editing in general was good. The range of shot types was good.

59)       Areas for improvement?
You could try colour correction on some the shots. Some cuts could be more on beat.

the main points that I picked up on, are:
-I've used a good range of different shots and different angles
-I've presented the narrative in the way I intended.
-the cheery up beat mood of the video relates to the track
-It appeals well to the audience

From the criticisms, I have received about the video, I will do further editing of my video to shorten some shots to make it flow at a quicker more fluid speed. I also plan on taking a bit more footage, so I don't have to shorten the length of my video. However, despite it being pointed out that the change of Florrie's outfit may effect the continuity, I agree that it acts a sign of time passing in their relationship and gives the video some variety.

In order to get further feed back, I will organise a focus group where I will gather a selection of my target audience, and I can discuss with them their honest opinions of my video and whether or not it is implemented well.
